How confident are you that you and your institution are copyright compliant? If you are copyright-compliant, how did that come about?

My institution implemented copyright compliance training and has a webpage within the Library’s main website to help address and questions or concerns. This sounds beneficial on the surface, but I fear it doesn’t do enough to help prepare faculty and staff for compliance questions or issues- at least to make them recognize the gravity of the matter. Rather, it seems a passive training alongside active armed shooter trainings. Is this the institutes fault? Nope. Collectively in education, copyright rules and regulations are culturally viewed as one of those horrible necessities. My institute is one of many who asserts ownership claims on patented inventions, research data, online courses, and even an LMS, which puts the weight of understanding copyright policies and practices heavily in the hands of many at the institute (Simonson, Smaldino, & Zvacek, 2015). Sometimes I feel that I am one of the many who tosses my hands in the air and just hope sometimes that I’m doing the right thing. That said, I have to add that if we were able to painstakingly ensure that everything was done correctly, our performance as education providers would unquestionably be stunted and slowed.
